Actress Angelina Jolie is joining an Irish-backed film project as an executive producer.
The 40-year-old's Jolie Pas Productions firm is signing on to The Breadwinner, an Irish Canadian animated movie, in which a young girl disguises herself as a boy to earn a living in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan.
It is based on a children's book by Deborah Ellis, originally published in 2000.
The project involves Irish film animation company Cartoon Saloon, known for their work on the Oscar-nominated The Secret Of Kells.
It will be directed by Nora Twomey, who also worked on The Secret Of Kells, with the screenplay by Anita Doron.
Angelina Jolie said: "Millions of young girls like Parvana are growing up today under oppression or conflict, and helping their families to survive in those conditions.
"This story is a reminder of the immense value of their contribution.
"I am delighted to be working with a talented team of artists who I know will do justice to the richness, creativity and strength of Afghan culture and to little girls like Parvana."
Academy Award-nominees Jehane Noujaim & Karim Amer and Gerry Shirren at Cartoon Saloon will serve alongside Jolie as executive producers.
The film is being developed with support from the Irish Film Board and Telefilm Canada, among others, and is currently casting for roles.
The Breadwinner is due for release in early 2017.
